If you’ve been thinking about semi-permanent brows, chances are you’ve spent more than a little time down the rabbit hole of techniques, terminology and before-and-after photos — and come out feeling more confused than when you started.
Powder brows. Combination brows. Hairstroke brows. The language around cosmetic tattooing can feel overwhelming, and when you’re making a decision about something that will be on your face for the next one to three years, you want to get it right.
So let me simplify it for you.
As a cosmetic tattoo artist based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, this is one of the most common conversations I have with clients during consultation — and it’s one of my favourite parts of the process. Because the right technique genuinely transforms not just your brows, but how you feel getting ready every single morning.
What All Three Techniques Have in Common
All three brow treatments are forms of cosmetic tattooing. They all involve placing pigment into the upper layers of the skin to create the appearance of defined, structured brows. They all last between one and three years depending on your skin type, lifestyle and aftercare. And they all begin with a thorough consultation and brow mapping session, so nothing is started until you’re completely happy with the shape and colour.
The difference lies in how the pigment is applied — and that’s what determines which technique will heal most beautifully on your skin.
Powder Brows
Best for: Most skin types, particularly oily, combination or mature skin.
Powder brows use a soft, diffused shading technique to create the appearance of filled, defined brows — similar to the finish you’d achieve with a brow powder or pomade, but permanently. The result is smooth, even and beautifully polished.
Despite the name, healed powder brows don’t look heavy or makeup-like. They heal softly and naturally, and can be tailored from the lightest, most barely-there enhancement right through to a more defined, structured finish — it’s entirely based on your preference.
Because the technique doesn’t rely on creating individual hair-like strokes, powder brows tend to hold their colour and shape more consistently over time, making them one of the most reliable and long-lasting options available.
You might be a good candidate for powder brows if:
- You have oily or combination skin
- You prefer a soft, filled look over a hair-stroke finish
- You want a low-maintenance, long-lasting result
- You have mature or crepey skin where fine strokes may not retain well
Hairstroke Brows
Best for: Drier skin types, those wanting the most natural finish.
Hairstroke brows use ultra-fine, precise strokes to mimic the appearance of individual brow hairs. When done well, the result is incredibly natural — almost undetectable as a cosmetic tattoo. It’s the technique people tend to gravitate toward when they want enhancement that genuinely looks like their own brows, just fuller and more defined.
The key thing to understand about hairstroke brows is that skin type matters enormously. Fine hair strokes heal most crisply and clearly on drier skin types. On oilier skin, the strokes can blur and spread over time — which is why a thorough skin assessment at consultation is so important before committing to this technique.
You might be a good candidate for hairstroke brows if:
- You have dry or normal skin
- You want results that look as natural and undetectable as possible
- Your goal is to enhance rather than dramatically define
- You have gaps or sparse areas you’d like filled subtly
Combination Brows
Best for: Most people — the most versatile technique.
Combination brows are exactly what they sound like — a blend of hairstroke work and powder shading, combined into one bespoke treatment. Fine hairstrokes are placed through the front and body of the brow to create texture and a natural appearance, while soft powder shading adds depth, density and structure throughout.
The result is brows that look fuller, more defined and beautifully dimensional — with a finish that sits somewhere between the softness of hairstrokes and the polished structure of powder brows.
You might be a good candidate for combination brows if:
- You want natural texture combined with added depth
- You’re not sure whether you prefer a shaded or hair-stroke look
- You want a versatile result that suits both everyday and dressed-up occasions
- Your skin type is normal to slightly oily
So How Do You Choose?
Honestly? You don’t have to — that’s what your consultation is for.
During your appointment at SAB Studio, we’ll assess your skin type, discuss your lifestyle, look at your natural brow hair and talk through the aesthetic you’re hoping to achieve. From there, I’ll make a recommendation based on what I genuinely believe will heal most beautifully on your skin and suit your features best.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer in cosmetic tattooing, and I’d never recommend a technique simply because it’s trending or popular. Your result needs to work for you — your face, your skin, your life.
A Note on Longevity
Whichever technique we choose, your treatment includes a perfecting session at six to eight weeks once healed. This is where we refine the shape, assess colour retention and make any adjustments needed to bring your result to its absolute best. After that, a colour boost every twelve to eighteen months keeps everything looking fresh and defined.
